Periodic examinations with an eye care professional, atleast once a year are an essentail part of good preventive eye care; since most eye health problems have no early noticeable symptoms and can be diagnosed only through an eye check up. However, a few precautions can be taken to protect and maintain the heath of your eyes.
1. Protect your eyes from UltraViolet radiation
The suns rays are a boon, but over exposure to the sun's rays can cause earlier onset of cataracts, age related macular degeneration & conjunctival growths & pigmentation. The eyes can be protected from the sun's rays by wearing the right sun glasses which ensure U.V protection
2. Wear protective Eyewear
Every year, thousands of people suffer accidental eye injuries. Most eye injuries can be prevented by wearing proper eye protection. It is advisable to wear proper protective eyewear on the job, while doing potentially hazardous task at home such as putting nails on wall or working with chemicals and while playing sports with high risk of eye injury such as basketball, tennis, cricket. When fitted properly, eye protectors can reduce the risk of significant eye injuries by 90%.
3. Have a balanced diet
For your bodies overall good health, a proper well balanced diet is essential. The foods we eat provide us with a wide variety of vitamins amd minerals necessary for normal cell growth and repair.Nutritional imbalances in the circulatory system can affect the eyes. Vitamins and minerals found in fruits and green leafy vegetables have been shown to be good for our health and vision.
4. Avoid eyes strain while reading
To avoid eyes strain when reading, keep reading material at the best distance. Make sure that their is good light on your reading material and good room light as well. A light postioned behind and over one's shoulder works well for reading.Good posture while reading helps reduce eyestrain.Try to avoid reading while lying on your back, stomach or side. Also looking up from time to time from your reading can help your eyes relaxed.
5. Protecting your eyes from infections
Eye infection can be prevented by maintaining good hygiene. Hands must be washed as frequently as possible care must be taken during monsoon when eye infections are very common.Eye medication should be used only on the advice of the eye specialist and shouldnot be taken from any person not qualified to do so.

Good points. I have worked hard to inform people of the need for preventive medicine. When eye disease strikes the cost is much greater than if preventive medicine was applied.
Thanx a lot, we are obliged to accept your appreciation..
